East Cambridgeshire District Council approached CPL in 2007 with a project to revitalise the quarterly magazine for its 33,000 residents, with the explicit request that it should "not be just another boring council magazine". The brief was to produce a magazine that was appealing to the residents, and which would allow the Council’s initiatives and issues to be portrayed to the readers in a way that made them understand their relevance.
We redesigned the magazine and brought forward a new emphasis on attractive features that carried plenty of lively photography, with case studies that illustrated the human aspects of each issue. Prior to each edition, we sent journalists to the editorial planning meeting to advise the Council’s officers on the best way to bring each story alive for the readers, and worked with the Council’s photographers on how to find fresh imagery that would be instantly appealing to a very diverse readership.
